Derek’s Pilgrims recorded a 22nd Sky Bet League Two win of the season by seeing off a game Morecambe side at Home Park, thanks to Graham Carey’s wonderful long-range strike in the 17th minute, along with plenty of grit and determination in the second half.
Goals and characteristics such as these only come through confidence, and after Argyle recorded a draw against Wycombe and a win over Mansfield Town, they were intent on bringing that momentum back to Home Park.
“I think that the players were coming off of a very confident week,” said Adams. “Going away to Mansfield and a draw against Wycombe, we knew that today was an important game for us. To win that match was vital, and we’ve been able to do that.
“We’ve had a great week. You see Mansfield winning 2-0 today. To go to Wycombe – they’ve won 2-0 today – and then to play against a team like Morecambe who’ve done well away from home; it just shows you.”
Argyle are not only confident as the end of the season draws nearer, but healthy, too. Adams was forced to not pick four fit players in the match-day squad for the Morecambe victory, as January’s recruitment and some excellent work from the management staff give the Greens plenty of options.
“We’ve won 22 games this season out of 38, and it shows you what a good squad we have”, said Derek.
“We’ve got everybody coming back to fitness now. We had four players playing in the Peninsula team today, in the reserve squad. We need a squad going into these last eight games of the season. It’s important we keep everybody fit and ticking away.”
After a gruelling run of games, the squad will now be able to take a short break to further optimise their fitness levels, before attacking the final eight games of the campaign – beginning with a trip to leaders Doncaster Rovers next Sunday.
“The players are going to have a couple of days off now,” said Derek, “because we don’t play until Sunday. Then we’ll come back in on Tuesday. Because we’ve trained solidly for a period of time – I think it was nearly 14 days we trained or played – we need a wee break.
“It’ll be a great game. It’s an opportunity to go up there and try and get the win that would close the gap between ourselves and them.”
