ARGYLE are teaming up with police officers in Plymstock during a special 'Week of Action'.

The Pilgrims' Community Department will be providing valuable support as local law men and women seek to strengthen their connections with the local community.

Building on the success of similar weeks in other parts of the city, police officers and community support officers are hoping for improvements for Plymstock, including significant reductions in crime and increases in simple crime-prevention measures.

Five days of fun will get underway on Monday, July 21, and finish on Friday 25, 2008.

Argyle will be providing assistance by running their Multi-Use Games Arena in the Deans Cross car-park for two hours on the Monday.

From 4-6pm, Argyle will put youngsters through their paces in all kinds of footballing activities and games.

Argyle's attendance will encourage a lot of young people to participate in the event, which will help the organisers achieve their aims of breaking down the barriers between the police and young people, as well as social barriers that exist between youngsters and older members of the community.

PS Dave Gordon, the Plymstock Neighbourhood Team Leader, said: "There is a problem at times with the perception of young people in Plymstock.

"Older people see a group of teenagers and it can look pretty intimidating, but most of the time they are not doing anything wrong, they simply have nowhere to go.

"However, the youths need to see it from the older person's perspective too. We understand both sides of the problem, and we want to help to improve things for all concerned."

Along with Argyle, partners for the initiative include: the Probation Service who will carry out graffiti cleaning; debt and benefit advice organisations; the City Council's Street Cleansing Department; the Fire Brigade, for fire prevention advice; and the Harbour Centre, which will provide drug and alcohol advice. In addition, the Armed Forces Careers office will be in attendance, giving career advice to local youths.

PS Gordon said "We will be setting up in the old Graham Peters shoe and clothing shop on the Broadway. The public can come to us for advice on crime prevention, security marking of belongings, and any other police-related matters".
