SHOW STARTS NOW

Posted on: Wed 12 Mar 2008

MANAGER Paul Sturrock had strong words for his players after a 1-0 defeat at Scunthorpe United punched a serious hole in Argyle's play-off hopes.

A red card for goalkeeper Luke McCormick completed the misery for the Pilgrims, although Luggy felt the dismissal finally shook his troops into action.

He said: "It has got to the stage where people are going to have to come to the show now. Two or three of them have shown they either need resting or being taken out of the team.

"It is vitally important that we don't forget tonight because we have untangled all the good work we have done over the last month or so.

"That is three defeats in the last four games, and we have really shown no urgency to the cause tonight. We have sat and waited, and thought it was just going to happen for us.

"We got in a comfort zone with the results we have had, and we have paid the penalty for it. Football is a zany game and you have to be at the top of your game for the whole 90 minutes.

"We went a goal down and had our goalie sent-off, and the next minute we are putting crosses in the box. Why can't that happen in the first ten minutes?

"I just can't explain it. All the things we were doing well, we have forgotten. All of a sudden we want to pass it square and back. People were not putting crosses in the box.

"I put fresh legs on there but you would not have known that. I cannot fathom why we just wait and wait for teams to score, and then we go and play. It happened on Saturday as well and it is so exasperating.

"We wanted to play too many nicey, nicey balls - too much tippy, tappy. We have got to get back to what we were doing in the past, when we were a much better side. There seemed to be a lack of tempo to our game."

Argyle will look to get straight back on the winning trail when they visit promotion rivals Bristol City on Saturday.

Luggy said: "We are going to a difficult place and playing one of the top teams and I have to decide what 11 player I can put out there, and they need to show the right attitude.

"There is no margin for error now. We may have to go on another run but it is achievable because we have got the same set of players.

"We went through a bad spell in January because of a number of situations and then we went through a good spell. We are now going through a bad spell again but these are the same boys that took us to five wins from six."

Luggy also knows he will face the Bristol City challenge without suspended McCormick and the sidelined Romain Larrieu.

Luke's dismissal for deliberate handball was undoubtedly harsh, and Luggy will almost certainly be forced into obtaining a new 'keeper on an emergency loan basis.

He said: "It was a bit harsh - the referee could have given a yellow card. Luke is distraught, but we have to bring somebody in now and go from there."
