JAMIE Mackie's wonder goal on his full home debut surprised many people, but not Argyle manager Paul Sturrock.

Luggy selected Mackie on the left flank in an attacking formation that saw Péter Halmosi on the right side of Saturday's 2-2 home draw against Preston North End.

"He scored one like that in training the other day," said Luggy.

"I knew it was in him but we didn't know whether he could play on the width because he is a centre-forward."

Rory Fallon and Steve MacLean started as the front two, ahead of Jermaine Easter.

"I know what Easter can do," said Luggy.

"He was not dropped in any way today. He has had a solid season, but I just wanted to see two different types of strikers together with Jamie on the width.

"Halmosi has come back from injury but you can see an apprehension in his game, and it is something I am going to discuss with him.

"His last two performances have not been Péter, to the standards he has achieved in the past.

"Rory has come to the Show now and he is appreciative of what is needed. We now need competition in that position, so that is one area I will be looking to strengthen."

The starting 11 also saw Jim Paterson line up on the left side of defence for the first time.

"Jim Paterson's first left-back performance was very solid," said Luggy.

"There are things in his game we want to slap him about for but he never looked out of sorts."
