STEVE MacLean has spent much of his brief Argyle career deployed in a slightly unfamiliar role.

The £500,000 January signing from Cardiff has arguably been forced to sacrifice his staple diet of goals for the less palatable dropping-off role.

Although willing to play anywhere for the good of the team, MacLean admitted that this season he is hoping for an extended run as the out-and-out striker.

"I just want to get in the team, do well and score a few goals," he said.

"I would rather play up-top and the Gaffer probably knows that, but I will play anywhere."

Those goals will be a great help to the Pilgrims, who will be looking to kick-off the season in positive fashion when Wolves visit Home Park on Saturday.

"It will be good for the real stuff to get started," said MacLean.

"We have had five or six weeks of hard work. We've had some ups and we've had some downs, but all the boys are now looking forward to Saturday.

"We had some good games and some poor results, but it is obviously better to get the bad performances out of the way now.

"Pre-season is all about getting used to each other and improving your fitness. You are also playing a lot of games when you are tired because you have been training so hard.

"We are all looking to the weekend and, hopefully, picking up three points against Wolves.

"If we can at least match last season or improve on it, we can say we have had a successful season."
