BIG CRAIG
CRAIG Cathcart endured a tough introduction to life as a Pilgrim - the 2-0 Carling Cup exit at Luton Town.
The young defender, on loan from Manchester United, admitted it was a disappointing night but, after only minor involvement in United's pre-season campaign, he was glad to complete his first competitive game.
He said: "It was my first competitive game this season, so I am sure it can only push me forward.
"I played three reserve games [for Manchester United], which obviously isn't the same standard. I played a game in South Africa against the Kaiser Chiefs, which was a step up.
"I also played 30 minutes against Portsmouth in Nigeria. That was a tough game but obviously very different to the Luton match, which was a bit more of a fighting game.
"I am sure I will get used to it after a few games."
Cathcart partnered Krisztián Timár in the heart of Argyle's defence at Kenilworth Road and, after a poor first-half; he believes there were encouraging signs in the second period.
He said: "As defenders, you need to know each other very well, so it was difficult. The first-half of the game was difficult but the second-half was better.
"I am sure we will know each other well in a week or so."
The priority over the next six months for the Northern Ireland Under-21 international is to help Argyle progress.
After a watching brief for Saturday's defeat at Reading, Cathcart is now fully aware of the quality required to survive and flourish in the Championship.
"Most importantly, I want to do well for Plymouth," he said.
"I also want to learn about league football because I am not really used to it. Although you want to win reserve games, there is not the same pressure. The fans put more pressure on you and we need to win games.
"I will just try to do my best in training and, hopefully, get a place in the team and push on from there.
"It can only help me and my development."
