GOAL AT LAST

Posted on: Wed 17 Sep 2008

ARGYLE skipper Karl Duguid celebrated his first goal for a year and half as the Pilgrims hauled themselves up the Coca-Cola Championship table with a splendid 2-1 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road.

Duguid netted in the 32nd minute, with fellow midfielder Luke Summerfield netting a second-half penalty, as the Pilgrims took three points for the first time this season in their sixth game.

Karl said: "It must have been a year and a half since I last scored. It's always nice to score goals, and it was one towards the first win, as well, which is even more pleasing.

"The three points is more pleasing than anything else. The lads in [the dressing-room] are jumping up and down because, once you get a win, that gives you more confidence, and we can go on from there.

"You need to get a win as early as possible when you start a season, but, obviously, we haven't had one and tonight was very important.

"Our away performances have been pretty good really. Obviously, we lost the Reading game, but we felt we did okay but conceded two goals to set-pieces; Burnley was better again - we got a good point; and tonight we got three points.

"We've got something to build on - away from home, it's looking pretty good - and look to take it into the home form.

"It was a solid performance. That's what the gaffer wanted tonight. We created more chances than we have in a lot of our games this season, so he's gone for solid and we've created more as well. That was pleasing."

Karl was switched to a central midfield role from the right-back position that the Green Army has been used to seeing him in this season.

He said: "It is something the gaffer did pre-season. It was a holding role but I still managed to get into the box and score. I enjoy playing there, but I will play anywhere for the team and give 100%.

"The ball dropped nicely for the goal. It came at a nice height just to side-foot into the corner, and there was a player in front of the 'keeper so I don't think he really saw it. I just passed it to the side of the player."

Karl admitted that the run of five games without a win had preyed on his mind, and those of his team-mates.

He said: "It weighs on everybody - the captain, the manager, every player. If you haven't got a win, you should feel that weight on your shoulders as much as everybody else at the football club but, when you are captain, you want to be captain of a successful club

"It's confidence. You win game, you get more confident. If we'd won the last three games, I think we would have gone on and won 3-0 or 4-0.

"Because of the situation we're in, you get penned back a bit, but the lads were great."
