PRESSURE ON EMILE

Posted on: Wed 07 Jan 2009

EMILE Mpenza faces a pivotal month in his future Argyle career.

Manager Paul Sturrock has cranked up the pressure on the Belgian to reach the standards he is capable of achieving.

Injuries have played their part in hampering Mpenza's progress since becoming a Green in September, but Luggy is looking for a big January from the experienced striker.

"It is a huge, huge month for him to show me that he is back to the training standards and back in games again," said Luggy.

"Emile would probably be the first to admit that he hasn't performed to the standards he wants to achieve.

"He has shown glimpses, which has whetted people's appetites but he then had this niggling injury."

Mpenza was included on the bench for Saturday's FA Cup defeat to Arsenal and, but for the magnificent performance of Rory Fallon at the Emirates, he may well of featured at the end.

Luggy instead opted to introduce Steve MacLean for Paul Gallagher and keep the same shape, as Argyle sought an unlikely draw.

Luggy said: "Rory Fallon was outstanding and I had already put the other striker on and it would have been very difficult to change the blend of the team.

"I thought Rory, as he had done for most of the game, would keep possession and flick things on in their area."
