LUGGY GOES BACK
A VISIT to one of manager Paul Sturrock's former clubs is the latest addition to our pre-season fixture line-up, while a top quality side playing in Europe next season will be our key home friendly before the new Coca-Cola Championship campaign.
The Greens have lined up opponents crammed with internationals from all parts of the globe for their sole Home Park friendly before the new season kicks off on August 8. The opposition will be announced shortly for the game, which will take place on Wednesday, July 29, kick-off 7.45pm.
Three days later, on Saturday, August 1, we will travel to Wiltshire to face Luggy's former side Swindon Town, kick-off 3pm.
Swindon finished 15th in League One last season at the end of a campaign in which they were managed, temporarily, by former Pilgrim David Byrne.
'Budgie' stepped up from youth-team manager to fill in between Maurice Malpas and Danny Wilson, who eventually secured safety by four points.
Luggy was manager at the County Ground between July 2006 and November 2007, taking over after Dennis Wise and Gustavo Poyet left for Leeds United.
He guided the Robins to promotion from League Two in his only full season with the club, earning the third automatic promotion place in a 1-1 draw with Walsall in the last game of the 2006-07 season.
Their club captain is ex-Pilgrim Hasney Aljofree, who made more than 100 appearances in the Green between 2002-07, but who has not played since February following a wear-and-tear injury to his right knee.
One to watch - if he is still there - will be striker Simon Cox, who was signed for Swindon on loan by Luggy before he left for Home Park.
Cox, who later moved to the County Ground on a permanent deal, was joint-top scorer in the Football League last season with 29 goals, attracting attention from, among others, West Bromwich Albion, who have reportedly had a £2m bid accepted.
Ticket prices for Swindon are as follows: adult £10; 16-20 year old and over 65 £5; 10-15 year old £1; under 10 free.
