HISTORY MAN

Posted on: Sat 11 Jul 2009

ARGYLE manager Paul Sturrock is hoping to be the man to make Home Park history.

Luggy met with the our new owners earlier in the week, and although he believes the meeting was a bit too early for wholly substantive results, he remains ambitious ahead of what promises to be an exciting season at the Theatre of Greens.

"When I think about it now, having a conversation four days after being taken over is a bit premature," said Luggy.

"There are a few new faces bedding themselves in, and for them to be able to tell me what I can do is a difficult one for them.

"Obviously, they've got to come in and see the extent of the club and the budget we're working with.

"I asked some questions and got I got some decent answers, but there were questions that no people in their right minds would answer. So there is going to be a timeframe for me knowing what the story is.

"The comments were very positive but it was a bit early for me to be tying people down.

"I'm hopeful they are appreciative that we can't wait around and we can pick up maybe two or three players which would put us higher over the budget but, at the same time, hopefully we can move others on."

Luggy is hopeful of making history at Home Park by becoming the first manager to bring a million pound player to Devon.

"At the end of the day we're not the kind of football club that goes and spends huge amounts of money - we can't be," said the manager, "because, if we buy a million pound player, we have to pay a million pound player.

"It's not as if he comes in and says 'I'm going to be a million pound player, and I'm going to fit into your wage structure'.

"But I'd love to think that there will come a day when we can handle that kind of investment. If we can put a team on the football pitch that is entertaining and attracts more fans, the commercial side takes off, and we have got really good training facilities, then how long is a piece of string?

"However long that takes, I'd be delighted to be the manager of this football club and one day be the first ever person to buy a million pound player.

"It would be nice; it would mean were doing things right."
