MAKESHIFT MARKER

Posted on: Wed 26 Aug 2009

ARGYLE manager Paul Sturrock heaped praise upon makeshift centre-back Kári Árnason after the Icelandic international's impressive start to his career in England .

Árnason made his Green bow against Derby County in an unfamiliar role, replacing Kristian Timar at the heart of the Argyle back four.

"I was very pleased with Árnason's performance on Saturday, in a position he hasn't played in on a regular occurrence. He did show that he is a Championship player," said Luggy.

Árnáson had been suffering from a lack of match fitness after arriving at Home Park following a loan spell at Danish Superliga side Esberg fB last season.

"It is very difficult to put these players into battle conditions when they are half-fit. We had to work very hard and Scotty's [Russell] done very well to get him up to speed."

The Icelandic international first featured in a specially arranged trial match at Harper's Park in July, where 24 hopefuls put their talents on show in three half-hour matches.

"What he achieved on Saturday has proved that the trial game we had was a great benefit to us."

Meanwhile, Luggy explained his decision to leave out newest recruit Alan Gow at Pride Park and insisted the door was open for the £175,000 signing from Rangers.

"Gow didn't know anybody. He played a bit-part in midweek but I felt our away style would benefit from the players we have used in the past, but he very much [comes into my thoughts for Saturday]."
