A VERY strong Argyle 'Reserve' side ran out comfortable 5-1 winners over Bristol City in the totesport.com Combination at Ashton Gate this afternoon.

A brace from Jamie Mackie and goals from Alan Gow, Ashley Barnes and Luke Summerfield sealed the points for the Pilgrims in a confident and morale-boosting display from the away team.

Argyle manager Paul Sturrock had opted for a very strong side for the trip up the M5, all of whom, bar Kyle Letheren, had seen Championship football this season. Young 'keeper Ollie Chenoweth was the only apprentice in the squad.

City's side was equally strong, featuring regulars Bradley Orr, Lewin Nyatanga, Ivan Sproule and newcomer Evander Sno.

Argyle started well and were rewarded on just 11 minutes when Jamie Mackie ran onto Jim Paterson's pass to slot past Adriano Basso.

The Pilgrims had the wind in their sails and doubled their lead just three minutes later when Alan Gow broke into the box to convert, via a deflection off Lee Johnson.

Argyle were soon three goals to the good thanks to Jamie Mackie's predatory instincts. Luke Summerfield despatched a trademark free-kick which was palmed out into the box and it was Mackie who was first to react, nodding home for a comfortable half-time lead.

Things got a lot worse for City just after half-time when youngster Ashley Kingston was dismissed for a wild lunge.

Despite the set-back, the home side battled hard and were rewarded just after the hour. Ivan Sproule's curling shot crept just inside the far post to make it 3-1.

But the hope proved to be short-lived when substitutes Ashley Barnes and Craig Noone combined nicely for the former to fire home.
