ARGYLE YOUTH 0 BRISTOL ROVERS YOUTH 0

Posted on: Mon 21 Sep 2009

AFTER losing their opening two games of the season this young Argyle outfit will be satisfied with their first point, in the Alliance League Cup, especially after a first half at Bolitho Park that saw Rovers in total command.

Rovers, led by former Argyle schoolboy George Boothe, failed to make the most of their first-half domination and, as is very often the case, the second half was the exact opposite with Argyle making, and missing, the majority of the chances.

Rovers first real attempt on goal came on 10 minutes when Elliott Richards let fly from 20 yards to force a good, full length, save out of Latvian Youth International goalkeeper Raivo Varazinskis.

The visitors continued to cause problems to the Argyle defence who were indebted to the steadying influence of Ryan Leonard, who was playing in the unaccustomed role of central defender, and his partner Jordan Trott.

Boothe saw his goalbound effort blocked by Jordan Copp before Richards' 20 yard free-kick bounced off the top of the Argyle crossbar.

Argyle were making their own problems by continually giving the ball away in their own half and it was the usually reliable Sean Kinsella who was dispossessed on the angle of his own area for Richards to flash his shot across the face of the home goal and wide of the far post.

Jack McKenna was the next to go close as a Argyle failed to deal with a long throw-in leaving the winger to send a diving header wide at the near post.

Whatever Argyle Head of Youth Coach said during the interval certainly had the desired effect as this very young Pilgrim's side finally took the game to the Pirates.

The introduction of youngster Jared Sims certainly gave the midfield a bit of bite and it was the schoolboy who sent in a fierce drive that had Rovers 'keeper Robert Holmes flying across hit goal to make his first real save of the game.

Rovers hit back with Varazinskis reciprocating with a great save from Richards but he was grateful to Lamar Powell as he fired the loose ball into the side netting.

Argyle hit back in style and should have converted at least one of three great saves with Liam Head looking to be in on goal before a great challenge from Steve Kingdom robbed the England Youth International striker as he shaped to pull the trigger.

Head then worked his way into the area only to send a great chance across the face of goal and wide before a great run from Jake Baker, ghosting past four defenders, ended with Holmes cutting out his low cross.

Varazinskis was again called into action by Richards and once again he excelled but it was Holmes that was the busiest in the second half with Head once again clear only to see the Rovers custodian make a fine one-handed save.

Another good Baker run ended with Homes saving his 18 yard drive, at the second attempt as Argyle finished the game on the attack but unable to find that vital breakthrough.
