TOUGH BAPTISM

Posted on: Sat 03 Oct 2009

SHANE Lowry and James Chester have arrived on the Championship scene with a bang.

The two 20-year-olds were paired at centre-back for the second time in just four days and helped guide Argyle to a vital 2-1 win over Scunthorpe United.

Lowry, on loan from Aston Villa, and Chester from Manchester United endured some scary moments against Scunthorpe's lively front pair, but eventually emerged victorious.

"It has been a lot for the two young boys at the back - to be all of a sudden playing at Newcastle, and then at Peterborough, and again today," said manager Paul Sturrock.

"Chester looked a bit leggy as the game went on. Lowry was much better in the second-half than he was in the first."

The result was given further gloss when considering this Scunthorpe team went to Crystal Palace last month and secured a thumping 4-0 win.

Luggy was hugely impressed with Iron striker Gary Hooper, but even more so with his young defenders in the windy conditions.

"They went to Crystal Palace and won 4-0," he said. "They have a real centre-forward. He [Hooper] looks an absolute class act and I would be surprised if he is still there after the window.

"He is top-drawer and caused us all sorts of problems in the first-half. He had about five or six shots in the inside right area, and I was disappointed with the way we handled him and the kind of balls played up to him.

"In the second-half, I don't think Ro [Larrieu] really had a save to make. The ball held up in the wind in the first-half, which made it difficult for the centre-backs to clear.

"It was easy for them to back in and pick up the crumbs. In the second-half, it flew through to them and the wind was a feature in the game."
