LIPS SEALED

Posted on: Sat 13 Feb 2010

PAUL Mariner refused to take the credit for his team's come-from-behind 3-1 victory over Barnsley.

The Argyle head coach saw the Pilgrims' concede to Hugo Colace's strike just before half-time, and then turn the match around with three second-half goals, from Cal Fletcher, Jamie Mackie and Rory Fallon.

So some choice managerial words at half-time obviously brought about the change? No, actually.

"I didn't say anything to them," said Paul. "It's the players that did it.

"I've been banging the drum for quite some time, telling everybody that we have a tremendous team-spirit. If you have tremendous team-spirit, you have a chance.

"We gave away a very poor goal at a very poor time of the game, which you think might have knocked the stuffing out of us, but it didn't. It galvanised us.

"I think we gave Barnsley one or two problems in the second half.

"We played with intellect. We got the ball down, rather than panicking a little bit; we stroked it around; we retained position at vital times; we put the ball in the channels with the right type of pace so that Jamie and Rory could do something with it."

The momentum swung Argyle's way with Fletch's equaliser in the 64th minute, and Paul was full of admiration for the way his captain took his chance.

"Carl Fletcher is a quality player, a quality individual," he said.

"He was slightly off-balance, leaning back, half-volley, left peg, and he took a little bit off it - because he timed it so well, it went into the back of the net with some pace. It was an assured, experienced finish, and it gave us some impetus."

The head coach also had praise for Karl Duguid, who overcame injury and illness to turn in a big performance.

"Karl Duguid shouldn't have played today," he said. "Not only was he coming back from an ankle [injury] for which most players would still be on the treatment table, but he has also got flu'.

"There was nothing that would have kept him out of the game. He's in a bit of a state at the moment, so we'll have to look after him tonight and tomorrow. That sort of epitomises what sort of people we're working with."

Paul will be keen to have Doogie fit and raring to go on Tuesday, when Swansea visit Home Park - and no-one is taking that game lightly.

"The players brought us down to earth immediately," said Paul. "They said 'We're going to enjoy this, but we're going to work tomorrow'. We've got massive games on Tuesday and Saturday. That's good to hear.

"I am a realist - I know we can get smacked in the teeth on Tuesday - but this is a very good performance and hopefully this will give the players to drive forward and accumulate enough points to stay in this division."
