TODAY'S COMBATANTS

Posted on: Sat 20 Feb 2010

THE Royal Marines Commando Display Team are trained specialists in unarmed combat; helicopter and building abseils; high aerial slides; and qualified supervisors of rock-climbing simulators.

UNARMED COMBAT

Unarmed combat is a highly disciplined method of hand-to-hand fighting, which is taught to all Royal Marines for use in active service conditions.

The display is performed by up to 16 marines in four-man teams on separate mats around the arena.

ABSEILING

Helicopter abseiling provides an exciting display of one of the many skills taught to all Royal Marines.

When abseiling from a building, the marines abseil either individually or as part of a team dependent on the scenario.

They descend from heights of up to 180ft during this spectacular display.

STATIC DISPLAY

Members of the public can have the opportunity to experience the challenge of the extreme sport of rock-climbing on the Marines' state-of-the-art simulators.

'The Rocks' is a mobile climbing wall with differing routes based on all skill levels, from the complete novice to the extreme climber.

These walls allow the public to experience rock climbing in an extremely safe yet exhilarating environment.

'The Rocks' are located under large inflatable domes which allow members of the public to watch those trying their hand at this exciting challenge.

ROYAL Navy personnel are asking for your support today as they prepare to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for charity in September.

'Navy Climb 2010' has been organised to raise money for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and the Royal British Legion. A team of 22 Royal Navy personnel has signed up to take part in the challenge to scale the 5,896m high mountain known as the 'Roof of Africa'.

The team is attempting to raise a total of £100,000 to be split between their chosen charities. Anyone wishing to support the team can do so online by logging onto http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/2010NavyClimb. The website also gives details of other fundraising activities.

Team member Chief Petty Officer Ali James, an instructor at HMS Raleigh, said: "We'd like to thank Argyle for allowing us to fundraise at the match. By putting ourselves through this arduous trek we hope to raise funds and awareness for these two often forgotten charities.

"Both do a fabulous job in providing support to serving and ex-Service personnel. As a serving person, you never know when you or the person standing next to you may need the help of these organisations and that's why it is important for us all to do our bit. We hope the Argyle fans will dig deep into their pockets and donate as much as they can to help us raise as money for these very worthwhile charities."

'Navy Climb 2010' is the brainchild of Petty Officer Craig 'Chewy' Hewitt, who is also an instructor at HMS Raleigh.

The 25-year-old said: "I've always wanted the chance to organise a charity event and to take part in some adventurous training, but being at sea on deployment has meant that it has been difficult for me to do both in the past.

"I'm now due to be at HMS Raleigh until the end of the year and I've just got my promotion to Petty Officer, so I thought that this was a good time to get involved and achieve both aims."

The RNRMC was created in 2007 to provide a focus for naval charity. It exists to give a better quality of life for serving and former naval service personnel and so is able to look after the men and women of the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines, Reserve Forces Auxiliaries and former Wrens - of all ranks. It also embraces families, partners and dependents.

FOR more than 30 years, the people of Plymouth have thrilled to the stirring sound of their own City of Plymouth Pipe Band.

The Band is privileged to have the Lord Mayor of Plymouth as patron and to represent the city at home and abroad.

The band is honoured to be affiliated to 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery based at the Royal Citadel.

The aim of the band is to foster and enhance pipe band music for the enjoyment of its members and the public.

The band performs at many displays, carnivals and ceremonial events all over the Westcountry, including Plymouth Lord Mayor's Day, Plymouth Armed Forces Week, the November ceremonies, and various shows in the Pavilions. The band has also performed at functions in the naval base and the Royal Citadel.

The Band is led by the Pipe Major, Eddie Campbell, assisted by the Pipe Sergeant, John Baxter, the Drum Sergeant, Duncan Brown and the Band Secretary (and Drum Major) Charles Crichton OBE.

The band would like to hear from new or experienced pipers and drummers, male and female of all ages, who would like to join this growing and highly successful band now carrying on the great tradition of piping and drumming at Plymouth.
