BALANCING THE PLATFORM

Posted on: Wed 10 Mar 2010

CAPTAIN Carl Fletcher is in line for a return to the midfield engine room for Tuesday's trip to Queens Park Rangers.

Fletch operated in defence for the weekend draw against Preston and head coach Paul Mariner admitted his influence in midfield was missed.

"We have got to find the best balance and the best platform to win," said Mariner.

"Carl Fletcher is one of the best central midfield players in the league. He did a good job for us on Saturday at the back but it is fair to say we missed him in midfield."

Elsewhere, Mariner is looking to persevere with the new right-side partnership of the versatile Karl Duguid and loan signing Richard Eckersley.

"You can see that Karl Duguid has been playing well for us at right-back," said Mariner. "The relationship is there for all to see. If Richard goes, then Karl sits.

"It took Richard a little bit of time to find his feet. You can see he is very forceful, a very good defender, he has technical ability, he's very quick and he's a winner.

"The good thing about Doogs is he can play central, he can play out wide and he can play right-back. I'm happy with him playing any of those positions and he is the right type of player that we need at this club."
