POSITIVES OUTWEIGH NEGATIVES

Posted on: Fri 19 Mar 2010

NOW the dust has settled on a thrilling Westcountry derby win over Bristol City, Argyle head coach Paul Mariner is reflecting on both sides of the victory.

Goals from Chris Clark and Bradley Wright-Phillips gave us a 2-0 lead at the break but the Robins hit back with two goals from Nicky Maynard.

Carl Fletcher's dramatic late winner sent Home Park wild but Mariner is aware of the mistakes his side made in allowing City a route back into the game.

"We are very upbeat," he said. "The boys are very critical of themselves and they're upset about the way the second-half went, but they're on the front foot.

"To a certain degree, we carried on as we did at Coventry. We didn't play as well but we played as well as we have at home.

"Going in 2-0 up at half-time was very pleasing. Obviously, you don't want to concede. We didn't concede as early as we have been but we still conceded."

Maynard's first goal came from a free-kick driven under our defensive wall and the equaliser stemmed from an error at the back.

"If you look at the wall, it jumped, and we don't want the wall jumping," said Mariner. "It obviously doesn't help (goalkeeper) David [Stockdale].

"Karl Duguid was blocked off as well. He was blocked off first time and the players told the referee, who chose to ignore him being blocked off again.

"Conceding a goal down the inside left channel again is not pleasing but we had the resilience and the fight in the team, and it was a super finish by Fletch."

Before the skipper's stunning intervention, the senior players used their experience to rouse the team after squandering a two-goal advantage.

Joe Mason was also brought on and Yala Bolasie switched up front in an attempt to change the pattern of a pulsating second-half.

"At 2-1 I thought we were ok and then, when it went to 2-2, you could see the air go out of the stadium a little bit," said Mariner.

"To look at the senior players getting around the rest of the team, you could see they were still fighting and we were hopeful.

"We always thought we would get a chance. We mixed it up, as we did against Coventry, by putting Joe on and then Yala through the middle, and the work-rate was still high. "
