INFLUENTIAL midfielder and fans' favourite Carl Fletcher has won this year's Player of the Season award.
A leader of men and and popular among the Home Park faithful for his never-say-die attitude, Carl Fletcher has made 42 appearances so far during the 2009-2010 season, bagging four goals in the process.
The former Welsh international has continued to put in consistently good performances, despite a frustrating season for Argyle.
The skipper's most memorable game of the season was arguably the thrilling Westcountry derby against Bristol City which saw the midfielder grab a last-gasp winner as Argyle ran out 3-2 winners to take all three points.
Carl was highlighted as a key player in Argyle's relative resurgence in mid-February as the skipper's relationship with Pilgrim new boy Damien Johnson started well.
However, the season was not without its personal frustration as Carl was sidelined late on in the campaign with a knee injury at a crucial stage of the campaign.
One of them was a massive game against fellow strugglers Watford at Vicarage Road, which would later prove to be a pivotal loss. The midfielder was ruled out with a calf injury following his recovery from a gashed knee. Mariner was quick to acknowledge Carl's importance to the squad.
"When he was injured, we missed him," he said. "As soon as he went off after seven minutes against Blackpool, I thought 'That's going to hurt us' because, obviously, his ability, plus his character...he's a fantastic professional.
"It's an absolute pleasure to work with him."Carl was also highlighted as being key to next season's push for an immediate return to the Championship.
