OPPO VIEW: MacLEAN SET FOR RETURN

Posted on: Fri 04 May 2012

STEVE MacLean is in contention to start against his former club on Saturday.

Cheltenham are likely to rest a few players at Home Park ahead of the npower League 2 play-offs, which could open the door for Macca, who scored six goals in 53 games during a three years as a Pilgrim.

Another former Green, Luke Summerfield, looks likely to get a day off as Cheltenham manager Mark Yates wants to rest players before the end of their regular season. Alan Bennett and Steve Elliot could also be omitted.

Macca has hardly featured in Cheltenham's campaign this year, playing two games during his loan spell from Yeovil Town, and not scoring in any of the games; on the other hand, Summers has been ever present for the Robins this year and won the club's Players' Player of the Year Award.

Home Park Return?: Argyle Centre of Excellence graduate Luke Summerfield could also play a part for Cheltenham

Ten years ago, Cheltenham needed to travel down to Home Park and grab a point off already crowned Division Three champions Argyle to get themselves into the automatic promotion spots. They went down 2-0 but they fought their way through the play-offs to join Argyle, Luton and Mansfield Town in Division 2.

Cheltenham town's assistant manager Neil Howarth was a player that day and he spoke about the difference this time round.

"We felt the pressure and they were the champions," he, "but it's a little bit different this year but we still want to travel down there and get the win."

"We're not resting players in view to having a weakened team; we've got a good squad of players; we've got 17 or 18 and who we've had all season and you could make a good case that saying that starting 11 would be as good as any we got."

Howarth also had time to reflect on the season Argyle have had. "It looked that they were going to have a long tough season, and every credit to them, they've done everything they needed to do."

"We were down there a couple of seasons ago and we've managed to move on; they are still down there, and it's not nice."
