VERSATILE Scottish defender David McNamee signed a two-year deal in summer 2008 after deciding not to renew his contract with Argyle's Championship rivals Coventry City.

McNamee began his career at St Mirren in 1997 and quickly earned a big-money move from Paisley to Premiership high-fliers Blackburn Rovers.

However, he failed to break through into the Rovers' first-team in three years at Ewood Park and returned to Scotland to join Livingston in 2002.

He played more than 100 times for Livi as they established themselves in the Scottish Premier League, and was a member of the League Cup-winning side in 2004.

That form propelled him into the Scottish national team, and, at the end of the cup-winning season, he made his debut for Berti Vogts' side in a 1-0 friendly victory over Estonia in Tallin.

His achievements had alerted English clubs again, and he journeyed south to sign for Micky Adams at Coventry in June 2006.

He made 16 appearances in his first season after suffering hamstring problems, and endured similar concerns last season, when he was restricted to 13 games.

Injury, unfortunately, has again been the tale of McNamee's season, with every return halted by a new concern, the latest being a fractured cheekbone sustained at Preston.
