BOURNEMOUTH YOUTH 1 ARGYLE YOUTH 4
HEAD of youth coaching Mike Pejic was pleased with our youngsters' performance in their Football League Youth Alliance fixture at Chapel Gate last Saturday.
Pej included two schoolboys in the starting line-up with Jack Stephens at right back and Jared Sims in attack - and he brought on a third, right winger Jed Harper-Penman, as a substitute during the second half.
Argyle's relatively inexperienced side enjoyed so much possession that the only surprise was that the home side somehow sneaked an early lead - and in a game littered with free kicks, it came in the 24th minute when their striker drove one into the roof of our net from 20 yards.
The Young Pilgrims hit back but striker Liam Head headed Sean Kinsella's corner over the bar, and then the Irish midfielder's well-struck shot was palmed over the bar by their 'keeper.
Persistence paid for Pej's protégées and they eventually grabbed an overdue equalizer just before half-time, when Sims arrived at the near post to turn in a low pass from lively left-winger Jake Baker.
Kinsella gave our youngsters the lead five minutes after the interval with a well-placed 20-yard free kick that was very similar to the hosts' goal, except it was taken a few yards to the left.
Head increased the Greens' advantage in the 61st minute when, after being brought down in the penalty area, he dusted himself down and promptly converted the resultant spot-kick.
Then, a minute before the final whistle, Stephens made a surging run into the home box only to be fouled, and up stepped Head to repeat his spot-kick conversion and ensure that our youngsters avenged the 5-1 defeat they suffered at the hands of the Young Cherries on the opening day of the season.
Argyle: 1 Ollie Chenoweth; 2 Jack Stephens, 6 Ryan Leonard, 5 Jordan Trott, 3 Connor Clifford; 7 Matt Rickard (14 Jed Harper-Penman 65), 4 Sean Kinsella, 8 Luke Young, 11 Jake Baker; 10 Jared Sims, 9 Liam Head. Subs (not used): 12 Sam Sawyer, 15 Jamie Richards, 16 Jordan Copp, 21 Ollie Chenoweth.
Our youngsters make the short trip to Newton Abbot Racecourse next Saturday for a 'Devon derby' against local rivals Torquay United (kick-off 11am).
The under-16 Centre of Excellence team has an away game against Aldershot next Saturday (kick-off 12 noon), and the under-14's play a friendly against South-East Cornwall Schools at Callington Sports Centre on Sunday evening (kick-off 6.30pm).
