James spent 2013-14 with Salisbury City as a player-coach before joining Luke McCormick in the goalkeeping ranks at Home Park.

He made his professional debut for Exeter City in 2003, having been released by Bournemouth, and went on to make 45 appearances between the stick for the Grecians more than two seasons.

After a brief spell at Torquay, James moved to Woking and then on to Salisbury, with whom he had spent time as a junior. After nearly 100 games for Salisbury, James joined Forest Green Rovers in 2010.

After spending two seasons as first choice goalkeeper at Rovers, James moved to Hereford United, playing 37 times in his only season at Edgar Street. Last summer, he returned once more to Salisbury.
