Right Team, Right Time

THE old adage about never changing a winning team is not one to which John Sheridan subscribes.

After a 4-0 win at Fleetwood on Tuesday which keeps Argyle in the Sky Bet League 2 play-off hunt, no-one would begrudge John keeping the same 11 for this Saturday’s visit of Morecambe to Home Park.

However, he said: “I’m not frightened if I have to change the team from the other night just because we won 4-0; if I feel someone is going to play and affect the game on Saturday because we are home, I will make that decision. I’ve done it before. I always try to pick a team that is going to win us the game on the day.”

What that means for the chances of Paul Wotton moving to within 10 games of overtaking Sammy Black in second place on the list of all-time Argyle appearances is anyone’s guess.

Wottsy, who has now played 481 times for the Pilgrims to 1930s star Sammy’s 491, played at Fleetwood after making an unexpected comeback in last Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Dagenham & Redbridge

“He’s a talker,” said John. “He bosses and he gets a grip of people on the pitch. That’s his big plus and that’s what we haven’t got on the pitch.

“He’s played a part in two good results, but no-one’s mentioned Matt Parsons coming into the team or Youngy [Luke Young] coming in the team – Wottsy’s just part and parcel of a good couple of games when we’ve had good performances and picked six points up.

“We have had two really good results away from home that has got us back in the mix, and one or two results have gone our way. We have just got to keep this momentum going and try to win the next game – old cliché – because every game is tough.

“We’ll respect Morecambe. They are well organised; they have had a good season; we had a really hard game at their place; and they are like any team in this division – on their day, they can beat anyone.”
