Argyle 1 Sheffield United 2 - Milk Cup

ARGYLE'S youngsters failed to learn the lesson of the previous day's defeat to Brentford as they suffered defeat in the Milk Cup Vase semi-final at Roe Mill, Limavady.

Once again the Pilgrims took the lead, only to switch off and concede quick goals to a very strong opponent.

Argyle were on the back foot for most of the first half and it was only the defensive capabilities, and organisation, of central defender Harry Downing that kept the Blades attack in check.

Sheffield continued to pressure Argyle after the break and only a fine goalline clearance from Rio Garside and a superb near post save from Jordan Duffey kept the scoreline blank.

The Blades were rocked, though, 16 minutes into the second half, when a quick breakaway saw Kieran Rowe beat his marker and play in Luke Jephcott. The Argyle top scorer sent in a fierce, angled, drive that was too powerful for the 'keeper who could only help it into the corner of his net.

It took the opposition three minutes to level as Downing made his one mistake of the game with a rash challenge on Rodney Bruce which gave Owen Clark the opportunity to beat Duffey from the penalty spot.

Argyle conceded again a minute later when Jordan Doherty played in Bruce who easily notched the winning goal and sent his side into the Vase final against Brentford.

The Greens will travel back to Castle Rock for a re-run of their opening game against Donegal SL, with an 11am kick-off, to decide who will finish 11th.

Argyle: Jordan Duffey, Jack Rhead, Rio Garside, Tom Purrington, Harry Downing, Elliot Crawford, Luke Jephcott, Jack Crocker (Aaron Goulty h-t), Isaac Burdon, Stuart Lamont (Ollie Tomlinson 13), Jake Hawson (Kieran Rowe (50).
