Pre-Pre-Season

JULY is upon us, which means it’s time for the Green Army to get those calendars out and plan for the season ahead – beginning with Argyle’s pre-season fixtures.

Once the Pilgrims report back for duty at the beginning of next month, manager Derek Adams and the rest of the coaching staff will be preparing the first team, reserve side, Under-18s and Under-16s for the 2015-16 campaign in pre-season training.

“Pre-season will be here; we’ll train in the training parks,” Adams has confirmed. “You have to assess the squad on the training field as well as matches.

“I’ll have a different coaching method to other managers, so until we get the players in for pre-season training, see their work ethic and see how they take on the information they’re given, it’s going to be difficult for me to know where the squad’s going to be, and how we’re going to set up.”

An Adams-led Argyle side will take to the field for the first time on Tuesday, July 14, when they visit Elburton Villa in 7.30pm kick-off. Four days later, they make the short trip to Bideford, where proceedings get underway at 3pm.

On Tuesday, July 21, the Greens head north to face Bath City in a 7:45 kick-off, ahead of their first friendly at Home Park on Saturday, July 25, with an as-yet unconfirmed opposition.

The following Tuesday, July 28, Argyle will once again visit Torquay United (7:45pm kick-off), before the final pre-season fixture on Saturday, August 1, once again at Home Park with an opponent yet to be confirmed.

Three fixtures have been set up for a reserve side to play against competitive opposition, allowing all of the senior squad a chance to get playing time and a chance to impress before the season starts. Tavistock (7pm), Truro City (7:45pm) and Saltash United (7:30pm) will host the three fixtures on Wednesday July 22, Wednesday, July 29 and Monday, August 3, respectively.

Argyle’s Under-18 Academy side have five fixtures to contest in July and early August, beginning with a trip to Topsham Town on Sunday, July 12. Games against Callington Town and Bodmin Town follow on Wednesday, July 15 and Sunday, July 19 respectively, ahead of a meeting with Exmouth Town on Sunday, July 26. The young Greens conclude their pre-season programme against Torpoint Athletic on Saturday, August 1; all the games are away from home and kick-off at 3pm, except for the Callington Town fixture, which gets underway at  7pm.

The Under-16s Academy side, meanwhile, are pencilled in for two games during July. They will play away at Topsham Town on Sunday, July 12 at 1pm, before travelling to Dorchester Town on Wednesday, July 22 for a 7:30pm kick-off.
