Walking to Victory

ARGYLE'S Walking Football Team came second in their FA South West regional tournament on Friday...

...only missing out on top spot by goal difference. They are now through to the National FA Walking Football Cup on Monday, July 6 at St George’s Park.

Argyle travelled to Exeter for the South West Tournament playing Exeter, Portsmouth, Bristol City and Swindon. Argyle managed to remain unbeaten throughout the tournament and only conceded one goal. The matches were 10 minutes long and rolling subs were used throughout each match. The tournament was a good test for the players but the next round will be no stroll in the park.

Walking Football gives thousands of older men the chance to rediscover the joys of playing football again through a sport that makes the basic elements of a match accessible to them by slowing the game down.

The pace of walking football may be more leisurely, but the game is still fierce.  It is by far an easier way of playing the sport, but it is still as enjoyable as the game they used to love to play in their younger years.

Argyle coach Andy Yates said: “Considering that Argyle Walking Football Team have only been up and running for six weeks, already getting this far is a great achievement for the lads and shows how far they have come in such a short space of time.”
