Remembering Dave MacLaren

WE were sorry to hear of the recent death of Dave MacLaren, aged 82.

The former Argyle goalkeeper made 145 appearances for the Pilgrims between 1960-64.

Scot Dave came to Home Park from Leicester City, who he helped to promotion to the top flight before losing his place to England 'keeper Gordon Banks.

Initially, back-up to Geoff Barnsley, he was an automatic choice for Argyle over the next three seasons before his former manager at Home Park, Andy Beattie, signed him for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

During his time at Home Park, he was the last line of defence in the team that finished fifth in the old Second Division - the highest-placed finish by any Argyle side.

He spent 18 months with Wolves before ending his career at Southampton, going on to play for Worcester City and coach in Malaysia and Australia.

Everyone at Home Park sends their condolences to Dave's family and friends at this sad time.
