Reading Up

OUR first round EFL Cup tie at Reading will take place on Tuesday, August 9, and will kick off at 8pm.

Sky Bet Championship club Reading are now managed by former Manchester United, AC Milan and Netherlands defender Jaap Stam after Brain McDermott left the club in the summer. The Berkshire side finished 17th in English football's second tier last season.

Their squad could potentially include Craig Tanner, who joined Argyle for the entire 2015-16 season on loan, having impressed in Reading Under-21s' 2-1 defeat at Home Park during the 2015-16 pre-season campaign.

The last time we played Reading in a league match was in February 2010. We visited the Madjeski Stadium for a Championship fixture that the home side won 2-1, with Carl Fletcher scoring the only Pilgrims goal. Earlier that season, we beat Reading 4-1 at Home Park, with Alan Judge netting twice, along with goals from Kari Arnason - currently playing in Euro 2016 with Iceland - and Ashley Barnes.

We have been drawn against Reading three times in cup competitions - each time in the FA Cup. The most recent was in December 1999, when Argyle drew at Reading thanks to a late equaliser by Chris Hargreaves. In the replay at Home Park, a Mick Heathcote goal was enough to get Argyle into the next round.

Prior to that, a 1-0 victory for Reading ended Argyle's FA Cup at the first attempt in 1968, while in 1920 a brace from David Jack gave Argyle passage to round two.

Ticket information for the game will released as soon as we have it.
