Captain Fantastic

Club Captain and fan favourite Gary Sawyer has signed up to become this season’s ambassador for Argyle Community Trust’s successful wellbeing programme, FIT FANS.

The FIT PILGRIMS programme, a 12-week healthier lifestyles course, is kicking off its second season with the guidance and support of Argyle Community Trust and the football club.

The programme, which is run by over 30 EFL Clubs and was launched in January 2020, is supported by over £2.25m of National Lottery Funding from Sport England, with its aim to use the magnetism of football to tackle obesity levels in over 10,000 fans across the UK.

The 35-year-old is proud to support the programme, and he intends to get involved in leading sessions when possible – sharing a career’s worth of sporting experience at the highest level with members of the Green Army.

Sawyer said: “I enjoy being involved with community projects and regard it as a massive honour to be asked to be an ambassador of a project like FIT FANS, where I can use my own personal experiences to help guide and influence the participants.”

The Trust’s health and disability officer, Emma Potter, who leads the FIT FANS scheme, added: “We are delighted to have Gary as our ambassador. He is extremely popular with our fans and will have a huge influence on our participants.

“It’s really important that those that enrol on our programmes have someone that they can relate to, as well as have a role model, so to have Gary on board with us is a massive bonus.”
