A FULL-BACK who balances attacking and defensive duties well, Joe joined the Pilgrims in the summer of 2018 from Shrewsbury Town.
His first season at Home Park was blighted by injuries, and the right-sided defender looked to be hitting his best form when a nasty collision with Armand Gnanduillet during Argyle’s 2-2 draw at Blackpool in March resulted in a broken elbow.
A part of the Bolton youth set-up since he was seven years-old, Riley graduated to professional terms in 2011. Making three Premier League appearances, Joe moved on loan to Oxford in 2014, playing 28 times before moving on to Bury, where he would play alongside current Argyle manager Ryan Lowe.
He made 50 appearances for the Shakers before impressive displays led League One Shrewsbury to snap him up in 2016. In the season before arriving in Devon, Joe was part of the Shrews side that defied all odds to mount a promotion charge – narrowly missing out in the play-off final, losing to Rotherham in extra-time
