A YORKSHIREMAN born and bred; Niall Canavan has represented the Republic of Ireland’s under-21 side nine times in his career.
The defender joined Scunthorpe’s youth set-up in 2004, and subsequently impressed enough through the youth ranks to not only earn himself a professional deal in 2009, but also attract the interest of European giants Liverpool.
Nevertheless, Canavan, a centre-half, remained at Scunthorpe for seven seasons, making over 150 appearances and scoring 15 goals, despite his role in the heart of the Iron defence. Eventually, he moved on loan to Rochdale, where his move was made permanent in 2016.
Two seasons at Dale followed, before he joined the Pilgrims in the summer of 2018. Canavan made over 30 appearances in his first season at Home Park and will wear the number six in the 2019-20 campaign, having previously worn 14.
