JOSE arrived at Home Park as Ryan Lowe’s eighth summer signing. The versatile attacker started his career at Everton and became the Toffees’ youngest ever competitive player when he made his debut on the opening day of the 2008-09 season - coming on as a 78th-minute substitute for Nuno Valente in a home game against Blackburn Rovers, aged 16 years and 191 days.

He made seven Premier League appearances before moving temporarily to Tranmere Rovers in 2011, ahead of joining Oldham in League One soon after. After an impressive season at Boundary Park, scoring 15 times, he attracted interest from Sheffield United, eventually joining the Blades for a reported £500,000.

In 93 games at Bramall Lane, he found the net on 20 occasions, including a brace of penalties in an FA Cup second round victory over John Sheridan’s Argyle. Unfortunately, off-field issues began to take their toll and Baxter endured a short ban from playing competitively after failing repeated drugs tests.

Baxter was handed a footballing lifeline by his first club, Everton, upon the end of his ban, and he signed a 12-month deal. Featuring regularly for the Everton under-23 side, Baxter earned a deal at another former club, Oldham, upon his release from Goodison Park.

Baxter netted four times for the Latics last season, evidencing enough potential for manager Ryan Lowe to offer the forward a six-month deal, with a view to extension.
