Pursey's Progress

PERHAPS no Argyle player personifies the Pilgrims’ progress through pre-season more than captain Darren Purse.

At Dorchester on July 21, Pursey was among the Argyle defenders embarrassed by a more match-ready Yeovil; this week, his sweet left-foot volley secured a third successive victory for the Greens which has set them up nicely for the visits of Birmingham City, on Saturday, and Preston North End, on Wednesday.
“Everybody was making a big thing about the Yeovil game, and getting beat 5-0,” he said, “but there were reasons for that - we played a very mixed side; it was our first game and their third, and that showed throughout.
“We’re looking a lot better on the ball, now. There’s a lot of confidence running through the side when we’re on the ball.
“These two games are going to be big test for us. If we can get two good results, it will stand us in good stead for the start the season.”
And more goals from the skipper? Maybe not.
“It was a great strike, wasn’t it?” he said. “A few more of those this season won’t go amiss.
“Mind you, I hit the same left-foot shot in training today and it went about 50 foot over the bar. It just shows you.”
