Greatest Pilgrim Managers
Ranked No.1
Paul Sturrock
It comes as no surprise that the man voted the greatest ever Pilgrim manager is Paul Sturrock, the mastermind behind two brilliant promotion-winning teams at the start of the Millennium.
Sturrock, better known as Luggy, was an outstanding footballer in his playing days, spending his entire career at Dundee United and helping them reach the latter stages of European competitions. Luggy also won 20 caps for Scotland and appeared in the 1986 World Cup.
He started life as a manager with St Johnstone and then his beloved Dundee United, moving to Home Park in October 2000. Despite inheriting a team fighting against relegation out of the Football League, Luggy immediately transformed the side to one that almost reached the play-offs.
In the following campaign, Luggy had built a superb side that stormed to the Third Division title with a miraculous 102 points. He finished eighth in the first campaign in the third tier but restructured the team again to lead us to a second promotion in three years.
Luggy left to join Southampton before the end of that season but there was no question this second promotion was his triumph. He managed Sheffield Wednesday and Swindon before returning to Home Park in 2007.
Although the second spell failed to reach the heights of his first era, Luggy is rightly regarded as our greatest Pilgrim manager.
