No.3 Tony Capaldi

THE Greatest Pilgrims, voted for by the Green Army, lists the top 25 Argyle legends in all positions and after completing the goalkeepers, we move on to the full-backs.

Greatest Pilgrim Full-Backs
Ranked No. 3
Tony Capaldi

At number three in your list is the holder of the most international caps awarded to an Argyle player whilst at the club.

Tony Capaldi beat a Moses Russell record stretching back 78 years when he recorded cap number 21 for Northern Ireland and it was fully deserved for a silky full-back, who was one of the stars of our Championship years in the early 2000s.

Capaldi came through the ranks at Birmingham but a lack of opportunities at St Andrews prompted a brief loan move to Hereford, and then the permanent switch to Home Park in 2003. He soon made the step up to first-team level and looked immediately comfortable in the second tier.

Capable of playing at left-back or left-midfield, Capaldi had a delightful left foot and made the game look painfully easy. He was slick with his passing, solid in defence and produced the occasional wonder-strike with his wand.

He also had a dangerous long throw but could at times frustrate the Green Army with his seemingly laidback approach. However, nobody could deny the pure talent he possessed and a great shame when Capaldi left for Cardiff in 2007.

He went on to play in the FA Cup Final for the Bluebirds and later featured for Morecambe and Oxford before drifting into the non-league scene.
