Former Argyle wing-half John L Williams has died at the age of 86.

John played 38 games for Argyle between 1958 and 1961. He signed for the Pilgrims in September 1958, from Cardiff City, having started his career with the Bluebirds, the nearest club to his hometown of Merthyr.

He played 27 times in the promotion season of 1958/59, and although he fell out of favour in the first team, stayed on for several seasons, often leading the reserve team, and setting an example to younger players.

He is typically referred to as John L Williams, the L standing for his middle name of Lloyd, or by John ‘Cardiff’ Williams, as Argyle already had a Johnny Williams when he arrived at Home Park.

He later played for Torquay United, then for Merthyr Town and Ton Pentre in the Welsh League, and would re-settle in Merthyr, getting a job as a training officer at the local Hoover plant.

Our best wishes go to John’s family and friends.
