Randell's Wycombe Reaction
There are few players in the Argyle squad who would understand as well as Adam Randell what a win against Wycombe Wanderers means to the Green Army.
With no win in seven against The Chairboys coming into this weekend, it was time to try a different approach against Wycombe, and manger Steven Schumacher came up with a plan to negate the physical approach of Wanderers by fighting a fire with a little fire of our own.
With Nigel Lonwijk and Matt Butcher operating as wing-backs, and tall striker Sam Cosgrove up front, it was a more direct Argyle than usual, but the approach paid off, as Cosgrove’s early penalty was the only goal of the game, earning a win that keeps The Pilgrims top of Sky Bet League One.
Randell and with his midfield partner Jordan Houghton comprised not only Argyle’s central unit, but were the only two players in the starting line-up under six feet tall.
It meant having to be involved in a more combative match than is usual, but Randell still managed to shine, and admitted to Argyle TV after the game – following a pause – that he enjoyed the game.
“It was obviously a different game to what we are used to,” Randell said. “For me, personally, it’s another learning experience. I’m just happy to get the win.
“We spoke about it in the build-up; how it is a team we need to start winning games against. I’m glad we could get the job done today.
“Our game plan was to get ourselves in the game, and we obviously we did that very early on. I wasn’t quite expecting it myself, but we got ourselves ahead and managed to hold onto it.
“We have a plan for every game. Each time, it is usually different, to give us the best chance of winning. We did that today. We just tried to keep ourselves in the game, not make any big mistakes and keep a clean sheet, which we did.
“Coops made some unbelievable saves to keep us in the game in the first half. Big Sam up front did a hell of a job for us today, keeping us up the pitch.
“We managed to regain a bit of control after they had a spell, which helped us to kick on. Ever since that point, it was never in doubt, I think.
“We’re already looking forward to the next one. Let’s get back out there and get winning again.”
