Walking with Welicar Challenge

Walking with Welicar Challenge

Three members of the Argyle family have embarked upon a walking challenge to raise funds for the Welicar Educational Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.

On Sunday, Bob Wright, alongside Lena and Gary McGuire of the Green Taverners, began the Walking with Welicar challenge, which sees them aim to complete 20,000 steps for 20 days, taking their first footsteps pitch-side at Home Park.

Argyle fans have played a big part in the Welicar Educational Centre's history. Firstly, by playing a crucial role in the fundraising effort to see the school open in 2019, before supporting its running costs since.

The school is aware of the role played by Argyle supporters, and children studying at the site will participate in their own walking challenge alongside Bob, Lena and Gary. Last year, the school discovered the news that the owner planned to sell the land and buildings as he was moving away from the area.

However, the owner appreciates the value of the school for the children of the slums, and has given the school an opportunity to purchase it at a preferential rate and terms.

The campaign to buy the land and buildings continues, with £28,000 of the £49,000 purchase price still to be raised.
