The Game
Argyle v Millwall. Home Park. Wednesday, 12 February. 7.45pm. Sky Bet Championship.
The Opposition
Millwall come to Home Park on a run of four consecutive wins, the latest a 2-0 win at Leeds United in the Emirates FA Cup. Prior to that, wins against Luton Town, Portsmouth and Queens Park Rangers have lifted the Lions up to 14th place.
It has been a good start for manager Alex Neil, who has lost just two of his first nine games in charge.
When Millwall beat Argyle in October, it started a run of four consecutive 1-0 wins, but they won just one in 11 following that, and during this run Neil Harris stood down as boss. However, Alex Neil has steadied the ship, and the South Londoners head to Devon in good form.
The Gaffer
Alex Neil’s playing career began at Airdrie and took in long spells at Barnsley and Hamilton Academicals either side of a brief stint with Mansfield Town.
At Hamilton, he transitioned into coaching and became the boss in 2013, aged just 31. Under his tutelage, Hamilton were promoted to the top flight and had started well before Norwich City brought Neil to East Anglia in January 2015. The Canaries went up via the play-offs that season, but were relegated the year after. The following season, with Norwich just outside the play-offs in March, Neil was dismissed.

His next job was several steady seasons with Preston North End, but he was sacked in March 2021 and was out of work until a move to Sunderland, in League One, in February the following year. Once again, he took over a side mid-season and guided them to a play-off success.
However, Neil did not stick around, and moved to Stoke City in the August, with whom he finished 16th in his only full season, and then was sacked midway through 2023/24, with the Potters in 20th.
The Squad
Midfielder Casper de Norre has featured in all of Millwall’s league games this season, starting all but two. The 28-year-old Belgian spent all of his career prior to heading to The Den in his native land, playing for Sint-Truiden, Genk and OH Leuven, before his move to Millwall in the summer of 2023.
Also featuring in every league game is George Saville (below), who is likely to anchor the midfield alongside de Norre. The 31-year-old came through Chelsea’s academy, his first loan out being at Millwall in 2013, followed by a breakthrough spell with Brentford. He spent three years at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which included loans at Bristol City, and Millwall again. After this, he signed for Millwall permanently and, although he departed for Middlesbrough, but was irresistibly drawn back to The Den in 2021, and has been there since.

Playing just ahead of de Norre and Saville in the Lions’ win over QPR was Luke Cundle, who made his debut and scored in the 2-1 victory. Cundle scored five times in 27 loan appearances for Argyle last season, before heading off to Stoke City on another loan. After sitting dormant for the start of this season, he joined Millwall on a permanent deal at the end of the transfer window.
