Argyle Women will look to do the home double over Watford on Sunday when they face the Hornets at Langsford Park, Tavistock, in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division.
Watford will be looking to make up for their FAWNL Cup quarter-final loss to the Greens in December last year, when Lulu Jarvis’s goal, and a superb defensive display, got Argyle through to the semi-finals, later this month.
Head Coach Ryan Perks is aware of the task at hand and the challenges that the former Women’s Championship side might throw at Argyle, but believes his side can grind out a result like the semi-final securing victory.
“Watford are going to come baying for blood,” Perks told Argyle TV. “Also, a bit of revenge after the, maybe, surprise result for them in the League Cup quarter-final.
“They’ve only had one game since then, beating Billericay Town 5-1 away from home, so they did bounce back quite quickly. They have got good threats all over the pitch, but we know their strengths and weaknesses.
“They’ve got a distinctive style of play, so we won't expect that to change too much from the last time we played. We had a good display on the weekend against Hashtag and didn't get the result I think we deserved, but there were positives in that game to take into the Watford game.
“It's probably going to be a similar sort of game as the one we had at Home Park. Watford will probably dominate the ball. We have to be disciplined in our shape and how we set up structurally to hurt them when we have possession. I think the one thing we've got to do better as a group is securing that first and second pass when we regain possession. That then allows us to progress up the pitch more, so hopefully, we can continue that this weekend from the second half of the game in Essex.
“I think we've shown in most games this season that we are very competitive. We're in most games. It's just fine moments where we might have a lapse of concentration or lack a little bit of quality on the ball, and we get punished, but that's this level for you. We’ve probably got to get slightly better in both boxes but, overall, we can see the improvement from November moving into the last three or four games.
“There's a structure behind how we set up and I think the girls have bought into that. We haven't changed shape much, but we need to pick up some points. We’ve got our targets as a team. We’re probably not where we want to be in terms of points from our target at the start of the season, so we need to pick up some wins and hopefully that can start on Sunday.”
Perks also ensures that the pre-match training and analysis will set Argyle up in good stead ahead of the game and put them in the best place to fight for three points on Sunday.
He said: “We’ve just got to focus on ourselves in training. That's what we do a lot of. It's around what we want to do with and without the ball. Obviously, we do look at the opposition, where their strengths and weaknesses are and their setup, and we give the players all the information they'll need to go and execute the game plan.
“However, it’s then down to the 90 minutes to go and put in a performance and they have shown quite a bit this season that they can do that. I think Watford’s league position doesn't show how good of a side they are. I think they're one of the better teams in the league and they'll be disappointed with where they are.
“These are the games we know we can win. We've beaten them before, so why can't we do it again on Sunday?”
