Birmingham Away

ARGYLE will face Birmingham City at St Andrew's in the first round of the 2013-14 Capital One Cup.

The Pilgrims travel to the country's second city during the week beginning August 5.

Argyle have met the Blues in the same competition on six previous occasions, most recently in the first round in 1995.

Then in a two-legged format, a Gary Cooper goal sunk the Pilgrims at St Andrew's before Andy Edwards and Jonathan Hunt cancelled out a Micky Heathecote goal at Home Park to win the tie 3-1.

The most famous League Cup meeting between the two sides came in the 1973-74 season, as the Pilgrims brushed the Blues aside on their way to the semi-finals.

Having progressed to the fifth round, Argyle travelled to Birmingham on a Wednesday afternoon in December, to allow for the electricity restrictions during the three-day week.

Goals from Alan Welsh and Steve Davey helped sink their First Division opponents and set up a now famous tie with Manchester City.

The last time the two sides met competitively was at St Andrew's during the 2008-09 Coca-Cola Championship season.

After goalkeeper Maik Taylor's 23rd-minute red card, Paul Gallagher waited three minutes to convert a penalty to put Argyle ahead.

But five minutes after half-time, defender Franck Quedrue levelled proceedings to earn a point for the ten-man Blues.
