The Derbies

THE Pilgrims will play Devon rivals Torquay United at home on New Year’s Day in the first of their four League 2 2013-14 Devon derbies.

First up is a trip up the Devon Expressway to meet Exeter City again on Saturday, October 5, before we visit Plainmoor on Tuesday, November 26.

Later in the season, the Grecians come to Home Park for a midweek fixture on Tuesday, March 25.

Argyle were undefeated in Devon derbies last season, drawing 0-0 at Torquay early in the campaign and 1-1 at Exeter just before Christmas, thanks to a Joe Lennox equaliser.

The home returns were much more memorable affairs, with teen sensation Tyler Harvey’s late equaliser earning us a 1-1 draw at home to Torquay United on Boxing Day, and Jason Banton scoring a classy winner in a 1-0 victory over Exeter.

The first of the Dockyard Derbies against League 2 title favourites Portsmouth is at Home Park on Saturday, October 12, with the two port clubs re-engaging on the final day of the season, Saturday, May 3, at Fratton Park.

The last time the clubs met in the league was in 1991-92 – the season before the Premier League was introduced – when they managed 10 goals between them in Two Barclay’s Division Two matches.

Honours were even.

Argyle – who were relegated at the end of the season under Peter Shilton – won 3-2 at Home Park on New Year’s Day, with goals from Robbie Turner, Jock Morrison and Dwight Marshall.

However, they lost the return 4-1 in February, with Dave Regis netting the Argyle goal.

All fixtures are subject to confirmation.
