Champions Reunited

YOU will have to wipe the nostalgia away with a towel later month...

...when one of the most successful Argyle sides of recent years is reunited for the first time in more than a decade.

The Pilgrims who lifted the 2001-02 Third Division title with a record 102 points will gather together to celebrate their achievement alongside the fans that remember their title triumph with a weekend of fun, food and football.

The team’s manager, Paul Sturrock, is hosting the event which begins with the title-winners returning to their old Home Park stamping-ground for a lap of honour on Saturday, September 28, when this season’s Argyle take on Accrington Stanley.

That evening, the old boys will be guests of honour at a Gala Dinner at the Eliot House Hotel, Liskeard, before, the following day, pulling on their boots to take on Liskeard Athletic in a match at the Cornish club’s Lux Park ground.

The final line-up is still being put together, but Paul Wotton, Romain Larrieu, Brian McGlinchey, Jon Beswetherick, Ian Stonebridge, Lee Hodges, Michael Evans, Steve Adams, Joe Broad, Kevin Wills and Martin Gritton are among those who have already confirmed their attendance.

There are still places available at Saturday night’s dinner, which is being hosted by the BBC’s David Fitzgerald, at £50 per person, or £450 for a table of nine.

The night’s entertainment includes a comedian, and the chance to ask questions of the players who won the title in such memorable style. Dress code is lounge suits or jacket, collar and tie, and the evening starts at 7pm for 7.30pm.

Sunday’s match kicks off at 2pm, with admission prices at £8 for adults and £2 for over 65s and under 18s.

All profits from the weekend will be donated to Liskeard Athletic.
