Tight Lines

DEREK Adams is certainly succeeding in bringing exciting football to Argyle, but after conceding three goals in their victory over Forest Green Rovers...

...the boss will continue to work on his side’s defensive setup.

The Pilgrims’ 5-3 win at The New Lawn was every bit as exciting and berserk as the score-line suggests. A double from Jake Jervis and goals from Reuben Reid, Hiram Boateng and Gary Sawyer secured an emphatic end to their pre-season regime, but not before they fell three goals behind within half an hour being played.

The five-goal turnaround took the Greens’ goal tally to 18 over their six pre-season games, but with them conceding ten in that time, Adams intends on rectifying those defensive difficulties before the season gets underway.

“It was a really exciting game,” said Derek, “but obviously the start wasn’t what we had hoped for, to be 3-0 down so quickly without a ball really being kicked.

“We were in control of the game throughout the match, yet we were 3-0 down for some reason. We made a number of defensive mistakes and gave away a penalty. That was just the nature of the first half.

“The goals we conceded were just a lack of concentration. Forest Green didn’t really trouble us and yet they were 3-0 up.

“I got into them a bit to try to get the best out of them, because there’s no point feeling sorry for yourself. They turned it around, and they were able to show me and the coaching staff what good players we know they are.

“That was the good thing about it, but we’ve got to tighten up a wee bit defensively.”
