Under 21 Cup - Argyle 2 Wimbledon 1

ARGYLE progressed to the next round of the Premier League Under-21 Cup - but it took extra time against a battling AFC Wimbledon side.

Argyle led 1-0 at the break via a Ben Purrington goal, but Tom Beere's injury time equaliser extended the tie by half an hour. However, Tyler Harvey's penalty in the first period of extra time was enough for the Pilgrims to advance after 120 minutes.

The game only lasted ten minutes for Owen Jones, who was susbtituted following a clash of heads, and he was replaced by Jordan Bentley, who lined up alongisde his brother Aaron in the centre of the Argyle defence.

This meant three sets of Argyle brothers were all on the pitch, with Cory and Tyler Harvey, and Dan and Louis Rooney joining the Bentley boys.

Argyle took the lead towards the end of a fairly even half when captain Ben Purrington, forward for a corner, got onto the end of Callum Hall's chipped cross to head home from close range.

The Pilgrims finished the half strongly, with Tyler Harvey hitting the post and Wimbledon forced to repel several waves of Argyle attack.

After the break the Dons came back into the game, with Cory Harvey making several stops, including one magnificent one at his near post, and Aaron Bentley making two notable last ditch blocks to maintain Argyle's advantage.

Argyle seemed to take control again, with Harvey again striking a post and Alex Fletcher being denied by a great save, following a shot with his first touch after coming off the bench.

Wimbledon came forward on one last ditch attacking venture, and got their equaliser when Tom Beere struck home from twelve yards.

The game went to extra time, and soon Purrington was giving Tyler Harvey a more formal chance to score from the dozen yard-mark.

Purrington was felled, leaving the referee to award a penalty, which Tyler stepped up to take. He hit the post for the third time in the game after the goalkeeper's excellent save turn the ball onto the goalframe, but the Argyle number 10 kept composure to control the loose ball and finish with his left foot.

Argyle: Cory Harvey; Billy Palfrey, Aaron Bentley, Owen Jones (Jordan Bentley), Ben Purrington; Callum Hall (Alex Fletcher), Jake Miller (Aaron Taylor), Dan Rooney, Jack Calver; Tyler Harvey, Louis Rooney.
