SWPL - Cullompton 1 Argyle 3

ARGYLE got the first weekend of the new football season off to the perfect start with victory in their opening Carlsberg South Western League match.

The Pilgrims, playing in the SWPL Premier Division after winning promotion last season, won 3-1 at Cullompton on Friday night.

Ben Steer opened the scoring in the first half with a fine individual goal and, although Cullompton equalised early in the second half, the Pilgrims stretched away to a comfortable win with further strikes from Jake Miller and Alex Fletcher.

“We started very well and very pleasing to get three points from the opening fixture,” said head coach Kevin Nancekivell. “We played some really good football but we can also get better by being a little sharper.

“I was particularly pleased for Jake Miller to get on the score-sheet, as he’s had a rough time with injuries in the past and it was a well-taken goal."

Argyle's next scheduled game, against Bodmin on Tuesday, has now been postponed, as Bodmin have a cup replay.
