Keep It Tight
12th February 2016
CURTIS Nelson is working on further tightening up Argyle’s defences as they aim to solidify their spot in the promotion places.
Whilst still boasting one of the best defensive records in Sky Bet League 2, the Greens have conceded six goals in their last four games, conceding early in three of those matches.
“We never like conceding goals,” said Nelson. “Personally, as a defender, I don’t like conceding goals, so if we do concede, we’ve always got to look into it and say ‘what could we have done better? What’s going to have to happen next time?’
“There’s always going to be a mistake somewhere along the line, so it’s about cutting out those mistakes and keeping a clean sheet.”
Clean sheets from now until the end of the campaign will be key as Argyle challenge for the Sky Bet League 2 title, and the Argyle skipper will remain focused on his team’s performances on the field, rather than what effect they have on the league table.
“I try not to look at the table too much,” said Curtis. “You can get too caught up in the points and all of that stuff.
“At the end of the day, we’ve just got to go out and try and win games. I think that’s got to be the main target for us throughout. I think it’s important to just look after what we do.”
With the exception of Josh Simpson and Tyler Harvey, Argyle have a clean bill of health as the end-of-season run in begins, and Curtis is urging all members of the squad to give their manager some tough decisions to make.
“It’s important to have every single player around every week,” said Derek. “We have got injuries now, one or two, but it’s important to have players fit and ready every week.
“It’s obviously a pain for the gaffer to pick a team from a fully-fit squad, but there’s competition now which is good, and it’s healthy for the team.”
