Connor Rolls In

WEMBLEY heartbreaker Connor Smith has become Derek Adams' latest recruit of the summer.

The former Republic of Ireland youth international will join Argyle on July 1, subject to a medical, less than five weeks after helping AFC Wimbledon deny the Pilgrims promotion by beating them in the Sky Bet League 2 play-off final.

Connor was born in Canada, but grew up in Mullingar, County Westmeath in Ireland, and has played for the nation's Under-21 side four times. He has also represented them at Under-19 and Under-17 level. He has described himself as a box-to-box central midfield player, although he can play on the right, as he did for the Wombles at Wembley.

The 23-year-old may be familiar to people who remember the Sky One show Football's Next Star, as he was runner-up on the show in 2010. Shortly afterwards, Connor signed a deal with Watford's academy side, and he worked his way towards signing his first professional deal in 2012, having just had a loan spell with Wealdstone United.

The year 2012 would only get better for Connor as he made his Watford debut in the August, in a Championship match against Crystal Palace. His first start came that October, as he played a full 90 minutes in a trip to Blackburn, with seven appearances coming in his first full season for the club.

He made 13 appearances in total for Watford, but, following loan spells with Gillingham and Stevenage, ultimately agreed to terminate his contract after his playing time started to become rarer. He officially left Watford in January.

Connor was a free agent for just a day though, signing a short term deal with Wimbledon, which lasted through until the end of the season. His time at the Dons saw him clock up 11 appearances, including eight starts, one of which was the play-off final in May, where he started in place of Sean Rigg and played 69 minutes against us.

Welcome to Home Park, Connor.
