Utmost Importance
25th March 2016
LOAN stars Jordan Houghton and Jamille Matt gave Argyle a comfortable 2-0 Good Friday win at Morecambe with their first goals as Pilgrims, to the delight of manager Derek Adams.
Chelsea starlet Jordan opened the scoring after 14 minutes and Fleetwood Town forward Jamille added the second just after half-time to keep give the Pilgrims a 20th win of the campaign and keep them right in the Sky Bet League 2 promotion hunt as they converted dominance into victory after successive defeats.
“We have been playing well and we haven’t been able to turn the performances into goals,” said Derek, “but to get 20 wins for the season is very important and, to get two goals, from Jamille Matt and Jordan Houghton...it was good to see them getting on the scoresheet.
“They have been welcomed into the squad and the squad is looking very strong. We have got a strong subs’ bench and that is very important.
“It was a very good win for us. We started the game very well and probably should have been two or three up in the first 10 minutes, but to come away from home and win 2-0 is very good.
“We did tail off towards the end but we knew we had the 2-0 win. We probably should have scored more goals but the three points are the thing that you need at this stage of the season.”
Argyle played the second half against 10 men after Alex Kenyon was sent off just before the break for a lunge on Carl McHugh.
“Carl’s got a swollen ankle,” said Derek. “It was a two-footed tackle; it was reckless; and it was a sending-off. I could see that from where I was and the referee was obviously closer than me. You can’t tackle like that these days.”
Thoughts now turn to Monday’s visit of York City to the Theatre of Greens, with Derek anticipating another passionate Home Park holiday crowd.
He said: “The atmosphere has been very good and I think the home fans have been delighted with the way we have played this season, with the performances. To be in a very good position with eight games to go, they are absolutely delighted.
“We have got a very good home record, as well as an away record. Today, we have shown that we have come away from home again and won another game.
“We have been in very good spirits throughout the season and, to get a good points total, we just have to kick on from here and keep on going.
“We take each game at a time and we want to try to get maximum points. That’s the way we have been throughout the season.”
